The coat is $24. The budget line is never just the coat. Here's what a school actually spends to put lab coats on a science cohort — the numbers, the hidden costs, and a formula you can paste into your budget submission.

The Three Costs Schools Forget
1. The replacement cycle. Coats leave, tear, outgrow and graduate. A sensible planning assumption is that a class set needs 10–20% replenishment per year. Budget it as a standing line, not a surprise.

3. The sizing buffer. Free size exchanges within 7 days cover planning misses, but only if orders go in a week before classes start. The hidden cost of ordering late isn't shipping — it's the class that can't do pracs while exchanges happen.

Per cohort of 30 students:
- 30 × ($24 coat + $5 spectacles) = $870 ex GST

- Total: $942 ex GST — about $31 per student, fully equipped, printed, delivered
Scale it: 100 students ≈ $3,140; a full year level of 200 ≈ $6,280. Add your 10–20% annual replenishment as a recurrent line and your budget submission is done.
Where Schools Overpay (and How Not To)
- Campus suppliers and bookshops charge more for the same spec — compare gsm, blend and closures before assuming convenience is worth the premium
- Customised "school range" pricing — through us the school crest is free on 10+ coats; there should be no printing premium in your invoice
- Minimum order penalties — we have no minimum order on Purchase Orders, so a small top-up of 4 coats costs the same per coat as the 100-coat order (see Purchase Orders)
