Don't Pay More Than You Should: How to Compare Lab Coats Before You Buy
You've found lab coats online at wildly different prices — $15 on a marketplace, $24 here, $60+ at a campus bookshop. Some of that gap is markup, but some of it is genuine quality. Here's how to tell which is which, using nothing but the product description.
The Five Things That Separate a Real Lab Coat from a Costume
1. Fabric weight (the gsm number). Lab coat fabric is rated in grams per square metre (gsm). A proper lab coat uses around 220gsm — heavy enough to sit between you and a splash. Marketplace "lab coats" at giveaway prices are often thin poly poplin that's closer to a painter's smock. If a listing doesn't state its gsm at all, that's your answer.
2. The fabric blend. The workhorse is 65/35 polyester-cotton — the polyester gives durability and splash resistance, the cotton gives breathability and comfort through a three-hour prac. 100% cotton feels nice but wears out faster and costs more; 100% polyester feels clammy. Our coats: 220gsm ±5%, 65/35 poly-cotton.
3. The closure. Press studs (concealed, low-strength metal) are the industry standard — they hold the coat closed through years of wear, and low-strength studs break away safely under strain. Buttons pop off and need sewing back on; zips jam and sit proud of the fabric, catching on gloves and equipment. Look for 5 concealed press studs.
4. The seams and reinforcement. Look for bar-tacked stitching at stress points (pockets, where the sleeve joins the body) and a set-in sleeve — a properly shaped armhole that lets you actually move your arms over a bench. Cheap coats use a flat "one size of arm" cut that rides up every time you reach forward.
5. The size range. A supplier stocking XXS to 3XL makes coats for real bodies. A supplier with "one size fits most" is making a sack with sleeves.
The Checklist (Steal This)
Before you pay for any lab coat, you should be able to find all of this in the listing:
- Fabric weight in gsm (around 220 is right)
- Blend ratio (65/35 poly-cotton is the sweet spot)
- Closure type (5 concealed press studs)
- Pockets with reinforced stitching
- A real size chart with measurements — not just S/M/L
- Where it's measured from (a garment-over-clothes measurement, not your body)
If a listing can't answer those six things, you're not comparing prices — you're gambling.
