What Size Lab Coat Does a Year 9 Student Need? (Parent's Guide)

For a Year 9 student, the short answer is: most fit an S (56cm chest) or M (58cm chest) lab coat. Our Sizing Chart maps S to Year 8–9 and M to Year 9–10, so Year 9 sits at the point where many students move up from their Year 8 coat.

S or M? How to Decide

• S (56cm chest, 101cm length) if their Year 8 coat still fits loosely over a school shirt and the sleeves still sit past the wrist bone
• M (58cm chest, 103cm length) if the old coat is getting snug across the chest, riding up, or the sleeves now sit above the wrist — all signs they've grown past it

The lab coat should cover the school uniform underneath, fasten without pulling, and reach at or just above the knee. If their current coat no longer does those things, it's not "still fine" — it's outgrown, and in science classes that matters for protection, not just comfort.

The 2-Minute Check (No Measuring Tape Needed)

Compare a garment your child already owns and wears over other clothes:

1. Lay it flat on a table
2. Measure armpit to armpit (chest) and top of collar to hem (length)
3. Match the numbers to the Sizing Chart — every size from XXS to 3XL is listed

If your child is between S and M, go up, not down. A lab coat is designed to fit loose.

Why Year 9 Is Often a New-Coat Year

Year 9 is when many students pick science electives and spend more weeks per term in the lab — which means the coat gets worn more, and an outgrown coat becomes a weekly annoyance rather than an occasional one. If the sleeves are now short, replacing in Year 9 is usually better value than stretching the old one into Year 10.

Common Parent Questions

Can a Year 9 just wear a M "to grow into"?

One size up is fine — sleeves should still sit just past the wrist bone. More than one size up means sleeves hanging over the hands, which interferes with practical work and undermines the protection the cuff provides.

The old coat has ink stains but still fits. Replace it?

Stains are cosmetic, and most wash out — see our stain removal guide. Size is the replacement trigger, not stains: if it still fits loosely and the seams and studs are sound, keep it.
