What Size Lab Coat Does a Year 8 Student Need? (Parent's Guide)

If your child is in Year 8 and their booklist says "lab coat," the short answer is: most Year 8 students fit an XS (53cm chest) or S (56cm chest) lab coat. XS or S? The One Question That Decides It

Year 8 is one of the fastest-growing years of high school — some students are still in their Year 7 size, others have shot past it. The practical rule:

• XS (53cm chest, 98cm length) if your child is still wearing the same size clothes as last year, or you'd describe their build as slight
• S (56cm chest, 101cm length) if they've had a growth spurt since Year 7, or they're already wearing larger clothes than a year ago

If they're between the two, go up, not down. A lab coat is meant to fit loose over a school shirt or dress — a slightly generous coat is safe and comfortable. A tight one is neither.

Confirm it in 2 Minutes (No Measuring Tape Needed)

You don't need to measure your child. Compare a garment they already own:

1. Find a coat, jumper or blazer they wear over other clothes
2. Lay it flat on a table — measure armpit to armpit for chest, top of collar to hem for length
3. Match the numbers to the Sizing Chart, which lists every size XXS to 3XL

If the numbers sit between XS and S, remember the rule: up, not down.

Common Parent Questions

My child is much taller or shorter than their classmates. Do I still follow the year guide?

Use the garment-comparison method above rather than the year level — height varies enormously in Year 8, and the chart's measurements are the reliable answer. Year levels are a starting point, not a rule.

Should I size up so it lasts to Year 10?

Many parents do buy one size up in Year 8, but don't go more than one size up. Sleeves that hang past the hands get in the way of practical work, and cuffs should sit just past the wrist bone to protect the forearm properly.
