Why Do Students Need Lab Coats in Science Class?
It's on the booklist, it costs money, and your child swears they "never even use it." So why do schools insist on lab coats? Here's the honest answer.
What a Lab Coat Actually Protects Against
A school science lab is full of small, managed risks — the kind that are safe when handled properly. A lab coat is the barrier between those risks and the school uniform underneath:
- Chemical splashes. Even in carefully run Year 7 classes, things splash. Acids, bases, and indicators can mark or damage fabric — and occasionally skin. The coat takes the hit
- Heat and flames. Bunsen burners are a feature of every Australian science course. Loose uniform sleeves near a flame are the classic hazard — this is why lab coats have snug cuffs
- Stains you can't get out. Many science marks on a school shirt simply never wash out. The coat is the cheap sacrificial layer
- Broken glass and sharp tools in senior classes
Why Schools Are Strict About It
Australian science safety guidelines require schools to manage these risks — and a lab coat is the standard, cheapest control measure. Teachers are required to enforce it, which is why "no coat, no practical" is real. It's not bureaucracy; it's the same logic as seatbelts: everyday protection against the one bad day.
"But My Child Never Uses It…"
Every Year 7–10 course has regular practical classes from the first weeks of term — dissections, flame tests, chemistry titrations in senior years. If the coat stays at home, the student sits out or borrows a spare. It gets used — just not every lesson.
Why It Lasts Until Year 12
