Lost Lab Coats: How to Make Sure Your Child's Coat Comes Home
Every lost-property box in every Australian school has lab coats in it. Here's why they go missing, and how to make sure yours comes back.
Why Lab Coats Go Missing
- They all look the same. Twenty students, twenty identical white coats — one goes home with the wrong classmate
- They come off in class and get left on a bench, in the lab, or shoved in a locker
- No name inside means lost property has no way to get it back to you
The fix is simple, and it's the same one schools use for every other uniform item: put a name in it.
Three Ways to Name a Lab Coat

Make It a Habit at Home
- Name the coat before the first wear — not after the first loss
- Pick one spot (inside collar) and tell your child that's where their name lives
- Do a 10-second check at the end of each science day in the first few weeks of Year 7 — after that it's habit
If a Coat Goes Missing
Check the science labs first (most coats are left there), then lost property, then ask the science teacher — coats often get scooped up with the class set. A named coat is usually back within the week.
